Registration will take place at the Moulay El Hassan Grand Prix circuit and will open at 1300 hrs on Saturday 29 April 2017 and close at 1900 hrs the same day (link to Google Maps).

Anyone unable to make it on Saturday should contact us.

This will be a great opportunity to meet the organising team, members of the charity, some of the girls the event will be supporting, and of course your fellow riders.

Argan Xtreme Sports will have bikes for hire (these should have been ordered in advance). Contact: or +212 (0)622 278610.

Participants will receive a carnet (download sample copy). For control purposes you will need this with you during the ride. An MAE number will be issued which must be attached and visible.

The MAE event will start on the morning of Sunday 30 April at 0730 hrs for a prompt departure at 0800 hrs.

Please familiarise yourselves with the feed/water/time stamp locations. These are marked on the carnet.

Apart from the Important Safety Information that is written in the Carnet de Contrôle, we would like to draw your attention to a few extra points:

  • There is a ‘washout’ where the road deteriorates for about 100 m at 45.7 km. Please note this on your way up in preparation for your descent.
  • Mobile phone signals are strong throughout the route apart from between 3 km and 1 km from the Oukaïmeden finish.
  • Bring sunblock with you as hopefully it will be a sunny day and one can burn easily.
  • The potential range of temperatures will be similar to that possible on a mountain stage of Le Tour de France. See:
  • As in any mountain event, there is a small risk of mist, so we recommend that you carry ultra lights as a minimum so that you can be seen.
  • The 2013 Etape, as you may well know, fell foul to bad weather as is often the case with some of the Etape du Tour events, so come prepared for the long descent i.e. full gloves, waterproofs etc. Read Mat Brett’s write-up of the 2013 event and come prepared. By contrast, the 2014, 2015 & 2016 events took place in more typical clear blue skies and sunshine. There will be the opportunity of sending clothing to the 140 km turnaround at the top in preparation for the long descent, if you wish to do so. Please come prepared with a labelled, plastic bag to help identify your clothing at the top.

Stamping carnets and turnaround points

There will be feed stations at 30 km, 52 km and 70 km and water at 30 km, 52 km, 61 km and 70 km on the ascent and 110 km and of course 140 km on the descent! There are cafés en route should you need more, so bring some local money (dirhams). There will also be an MAE vehicle patrolling the route carrying extra water as well as Argan Sports support vehicles.

Make sure your carnet is stamped at the beginning of the event on the morning of the 30 April and at your turnaround point.

We have the following official turnaround points: 30 km, 52 km and the full 70 km. If you are turning around, please get your carnet stamped at the appropriate location and inform the marshal of your intention to turn around before the top. If you turn around in between an official turnaround point, please make sure to stop at the next turnaround point on the way down and get your carnet stamped. Please take care as the location is likely to be on the opposite side of the road.

On entering Oukaïmeden, there is a road barrier. The finish is approx 1 km further on.

On your return to Marrakech, subtract 5 km from the kilometre markers as they refer to the centre of Marrakech. This will give you the distance to the finish.
